MATTHEW ISLAND

Matthew Island is a small volcanic island in the South Pacific, located southeast of Vanuatu and east of New Caledonia. It consists of two volcanic cones and is uninhabited, with sparse vegetation and serving as a nesting site for seabirds. Discovered in the 18th century, the island has been subject to territorial disputes between France (via New Caledonia) and Vanuatu, though it is currently under French control. Known for its geological significance, Matthew Island occasionally draws researchers but remains largely inaccessible to tourists due to its remoteness and volcanic activity.
